The 21st century will be of materials century. Developments in the design of aircraft, cars, electronic equipment, domestic appliances and many other items depend critically upon the availability of new and innovative materials. Pakistan entered into an era of specialized hi-tech materials after a classical steel mill’s metallurgy and has started to produce various types of missiles, sub marines, fighter planes, tanks, power plants, shops and oilrigs. There is an emergent National demand for new materials that can only be fulfilled by producing materials engineers.
The Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Department is currently offering Bachelor, Master and Ph. D. programs in the field of materials and metallurgy. The curricula for the 4-year Bachelor degree in Materials Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering are specifically designed to commensurate with the need of the industry and R & D at home and keeping in view of the recent research trends abroad in the field to impart quality education at standards equal to that of any international university on the field of materials. The Department is offering Graduate Programme in Materials Engineering with specialization in advanced fields of materials engineering, such as Phase Transformation in Materials, Production of Iron and Steels, Advanced Materials Chracterisation Techniques, Advanced Surface Coatings and Electron Microscopy related to nano-technology, smart materials, biomaterials and functional materials. The Masters degree is awarded after successful completion of 30-credit hours course work. The department is also offering a postgraduate Ph. D. degree programme by research in the most advanced field of the materials engineering.
The Ph. D. programme is aimed at faculty development for the Department and is therefore being offered to faculty members of the University. However any one else can undertake the programme on full time basis. In the Department, the students utilize the state-of-the-art equipment for the complete examination, characterization, and evaluation of materials. They gain an understanding of the distinct characteristics of metals, polymers and ceramics: how there structure can be altered by different treatments and manufacturing processes to produce desired properties; and how they can be designed to meet specific needs. This intensive study of materials is the foundation upon which the students may build, after graduation, to apply them to direct research, develop improved materials, control processes, design plants, provide product promotion, or manage various operation in the materials engineering.
